Varner & Leverton transferred to New Orleans

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced several transactions that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's series finale with the Mobile BayBears at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.

Reliever Rett Varner has been transferred from Jacksonville to Triple-A New Orleans. In ten appearances with the Suns this year, the right-hander owns a 1-1 record and 5.25 ERA. This marks the third time Varner has been transferred to New Orleans this season and in one appearance with the Zephyrs fired two innings and allowed one run, striking out three on April 10 at Memphis.

In addition, reliever James Leverton has also been transferred from Jacksonville to Triple-A New Orleans. The 27-year-old has compiled a 1-1 mark and 5.85 ERA in 11 appearances, including one start for Jacksonville this season.

The Marlins also announced RHP Bryan Evans has been reinstated from the Disabled List. Evans, who has not appeared in a game yet this season, made 29 appearances, 27 of which were starts, for the Suns in 2012 and recorded a 7-8 clip and 4.66 ERA (70 ER in 135.1 IP). The California native has also pitched for Jacksonville during the 2010 and 2011 campaigns and overall owns a 10-9 record and 4.38 ERA (84 ER in 172.2 IP) in 38 appearances (33 starts) for the Suns.

In addition, the Marlins have also transferred RHP Robert Waite to Jacksonville from High-A Jupiter. Waite, who was signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent on May 1, accumulated a 1-0 record and 2.70 ERA (1 ER in 3.1 IP) in two appearances for the Hammerheads.

The Suns roster stands at 25, and a revised roster is attached.

Jacksonville and Mobile are slated to meet later tonight at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Alabama in the series finale, with first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. ET. The Suns return to Bragan Field on Thursday, May 23 for a five-game series with the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
