MOBILE, Ala. - Christian Yelich homered again and the Jacksonville Suns (22-15) finished their five-game road series in Mobile with a second straight win, beating the BayBears (19-21) by a score of 4-3 at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After beginning the five-game set with three consecutive losses, the first time in 2013 Jacksonville had dropped three straight to the same opponent, the Suns rebounded with a win Wednesday and another on Thursday, moving back to seven games over .500.
The Suns gave starter Adam Conley (3-1) a handful of run support in the very first inning, scoring their first two runs on RBI groundouts from Ryan Fisher and J.T. Realmuto. Audy Ciriaco added an RBI single off Bradin Hagens (4-3) on a sharp liner to center to score Kyle Jensen and hand Conley a 3-0 lead before he ever toed the rubber.
Conley held the three-run advantage until the third, when a Realmuto throwing error with a pair of runners on base allowed Mobile to plate its first run of the game and cut the lead to 3-1. The BayBears would get a run closer in the fourth on Nick Evans' sixth home run of the season and eventually tie the game in the same frame on a Ray Willy Gomez RBI double.
The Suns left-hander stymied the BayBears outside of the troublesome third and fourth innings, however, and earned his third straight win with five solid innings. Conley allowed just two earned runs and struck out three in winning three consecutive starts for the first time in his career.
Conley was able to garner that third victory thanks to a Mobile defensive miscue in the top of the fifth. With Christian Yelich on third after doubling and advancing on a wild pitch, Jake Marisnick lifted a fly ball to right. Yelich bluffed a tag after the catch, but once the throw came back into the infield, Hagens threw the ball away for an error, allowing Yelich to score the go-ahead runner.
With Jacksonville leading 4-3, relievers Scott McGough and Arquimedes Caminero navigated the sixth, seventh and eighth innings without incident, maintaining the one-run lead. Yelich provided insurance in the top of the ninth with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast that pushed the Suns' lead to 6-3.
Michael Brady then pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save and give the Suns a much-needed victory heading into a key series on the road against the first-place Mississippi Braves.
Sam Dyson (0-3, 2.65)) is scheduled to get the ball for the Suns in game one of the five-game series in Mississippi, which begins with Jacksonville trailing the Braves by a game and a half in the Southern League South division. The Braves will turn to right-hander Cody Martin (1-2, 3.31) in Friday's opener.
Suns fans can listen to Friday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:45 p.m. with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
