Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 1, 2013) - The Fort Myers Miracle came from behind to defeat the Bradenton Marauders 3-2 in 10 innings on Sunday at Hammond Stadium in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Miracle will take Labor Day off and travel to Port Charlotte to face the Charlotte Stone Crabs in game 1 of the Florida State League South Division playoff series on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
In the regular season's last game, the Miracle trailed 2-0 but Kennys Vargas sparked a rally in the seventh and delivered a walk-off single in the 10th.
Vargas hit his 19th homer of the season in the seventh to put the Miracle on the board. In the 10th with the bases loaded, he singled against a drawn-in infield to give the Miracle the victory. Vargas' two runs driven in gave him 93 in the regular season which moved him past St. Lucie's Dustin Lawley for the most in the Florida State League.
Miracle starter Matt Tomshaw scattered seven hits and gave up two runs in seven strong innings to keep his team in it.
Bradenton scored its first run in the second. Jose Osuna doubled with one out and moved to third on an infield single by Devan Ivany. Osuna then scored on a sac fly from D.J. Crumlich.
The score remained 1-0 until Dan Gamache cranked his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the sixth off of Tomshaw.
Joan Montero held the Miracle scoreless over five innings, but his bullpen couldn't get him the win.
James McDonald, in a rehab appearance for the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitched a 1-2-3 sixth but was tagged for a home run by Vargas to lead off the seventh. After Jairo Rodriguez grounded out, Mike Kvasnicka and Levi Michael singled. Kvasnicka then stole third and Michael stole second. A.J. Pettersen followed by beating out an infield single and Kvasnicka scored to tie the game 2-2.
The game remained tied until the 10th. Zack Von Rosenberg was greeted with a bunt single from Andy Leer. He then plunked Jhon Goncalves and D.J. Hicks to load the bases. Vargas singled up the middle to plate Leer and end the game.
Adrian Salcedo pitched two scoreless innings to get the win.
Game 1 of the Division Series at Charlotte on Tuesday will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in Fort Myers and worldwide on www.miraclebaseball.com. Join Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the Square One Burgers and Bar pregame show at 6:10 p.m.
