February 25, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

Everett, WA - Tyson Sexsmith stopped all 29 shots faced Wednesday night to lead the Vancouver Giants to an 8-0 victory over Everett. Sexsmith's shutout would be his sixth of the season and 30th of his WHL career. Garry Nunn led the scoring with a hat trick and the game's first star. Wednesday's loss would be Everett's third shutout loss against Vancouver this season.

This brings the 'Tips record to 25-29-7-2 with 59 points in 63 games played taking them to seventh place in the Western Conference, standing three points behind the Kamloops Blazers. Silvertips are now 3-6-1-0 in their last 10 games. The Silvertips return to action Friday, February 27th at Comcast Arena to take on the Tri-City Americans at 7:35!

Despite a strong start to the game, Everett would be the first to surrender a goal Wednesday night. Garry Nunn added his 20th of the season burying a hard backhand shot past Thomas Heemskerk from the slot, the goal came at 5 minutes and 22 seconds giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. Everett's penalty kill would stop a lengthy Vancouver 5 on 3, however the Silvertips couldn't stay out of the box when Ryan White was called for elbowing at 18:26 and the Giants capitalized. Nunn scored his second of the game collecting a rebound in front of the net and beating Heemskerk at 18:47 leading to a 2-0 Vancouver lead after 20 minutes.

Vancouver's WHL third ranked penalty kill, at 85.9 percent, struck the Silvertips by creating a turnover in the Everett zone. Brent Regner made a great pass out of the corner to an open Craig Cunningham who found the back of the net at 6:02. Cunningham struck again at 9:45, this time collecting a rebound off a Bronson Maschmeyer shot and snapping home his 27th of the season to make the score 4-0. Jamie Tucker added to Vancouver's score skating hard to the net and stick-handling past Heemskerk at 12:34. The Giant's fifth goal of the night made for a change in goal as Kent Simpson came in to relieve Heemskerk. Vancouver would lead in shots 34-20 after 40 minutes of hockey.

Nunn completed the hat trick at 10:27 of the third period. Collecting a Mike Alexander turnover, Nunn skated in from the top of the left circle before beating Simpson glove side. Vancouver's constant pressure led to their seventh goal of the game. Adam Basford collected a rebound on top of the crease at 11:29, scoring his 11th of the season. Vancouver completed their scoring at 18:49 with Basford's second goal of the game sealing a 8-0 victory over Everett.
