Rob Fowler To Be Honoured Friday
February 25, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - All star second Rob Fowler of the Manitoba Men's Curling Championship rink, skipped by Winnipeg's Jeff Stoughton, will be recognized during this Friday's Western Hockey League game between the Brandon Wheat Kings and Saskatoon Blades at Westman Place.
Stoughton defeated Kerry Burtnyk 7-6 Sunday afternoon in Selkirk to capture his record breaking seventh provincial title.
During the first intermission of Friday's first place game, Fowler will be honoured as February's recipient of the Wheat Kings' Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month Award.
With the game tied at six, playing the tenth end, Burtnyk had little choice but to draw to his own rock in the back of the four foot. However, his rock over-curled and Stoughton didn't have to throw the last one.
Sunday's win clinched Fowler his second provincial crown. Joining Stoughton and Fowler on this year's Safeway Selects championship foursome were Kevin Park and Steve Gould.
Stoughton, Fowler, Gould and Park will now represent Manitoba at the 2009 Tim Hortons Brier, scheduled to begin next weekend at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary.
Fowler becomes the fourth recipient of the Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month recipient for 2008-09. This year marks the fifth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official web site and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officials for this prestigious award.
Before taking to the ice to meet the first place Blades this weekend, the Wheat Kings will face off against the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday night. Puck drop is at seven and tickets are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
