Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants snapped their 8 game losing streak, earning their first win in the month of March, defeating the Kelowna Rockets 4-3 Saturday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna. Andrej Stastny led the way with a goal, 2 assists, and first star honours.
The big key for Vancouver was getting on the board first and they would do it thanks to Luke Fenske. The blueliner scored his 4th goal of the season shorthanded to give the Giants a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.
Kelowna evened the game at 1-1 just before the midway point of the second period, but just over two minutes later Spencer Bennett potted his 35th of the year on the power play to make it 2-1. The Rockets would get the equalizer less than a minute later; however, once again the Giants would respond. Andrej Stastny undressed Tyson Barrie and dished off a sweet feed to Connor Redmond, who tapped it in for his 1st goal of the season. Vancouver led 3-2 after two periods.
In the third period the home team would not go away, tying the game once again, this time on the man advantage, 3-3. Stastny, snakebitten as of late, finally found the back of the net, snapping his 8 game goalless drought, wristing home his 10th goal of the season. It proved to be the game winner. Vancouver won 4-3. Mark Segal was solid in net making 24 saves for his 26th victory of the season. Despite the win, the Giants remain one point back of Chilliwack for 5th in the Western Conference. If Vancouver earns a point tomorrow vs. Everett they will move past the Bruins, finish 5th, and play Tri-City in the opening round. If they lose tomorrow, they will finish 6th, and take on Spokane in the first round.
The Giants wrap up the 2010-2011 regular season schedule tomorrow night on home ice when they host the Everett Silvertips. Puck drop is at 5:00pm. The pregame show begins at 4:30pm on AM 650. It is Jerseys Off Our Backs Night. The Vancouver Giants will give away their 10th anniversary jersey's following the game, plus the top 10 Giants of the decade will be unveiled.
