Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Memorial Stadium - Boise, ID) - After working to establish a seven-run lead heading to the bottom of the 6th inning, Vancouver's bullpen fell apart as they allowed Boise to score eight unanswered runs and stun the Canadians 8-7 in the first meeting between these two teams since the 2013 Northwest League Championship.
DH Max Pentecost went 2-for-5 with a triple and LF Chris Carlson had a 2-for-4 night with a double as the Canadians pounded out 13 hits on Wednesday night building an impressive 7-0 lead heading to the bottom of the 6th.
While the Canadians were scoring early, LHP Jairo Labourt was keeping the Hawks off the scoreboard going five innings of shutout baseball, striking out six allowing just two hits.
RHP Tim Mayza would allow a run in the bottom of the 6th inning cutting the Canadians lead to 7-1, and in the bottom of the 7th inning, RHP Alberto Tirado would get touched up for five earned runs before turning the ball over to LHP Jose Fernandez who allowed the tying run before the game finally got to the 8th inning.
Once in the 8th inning, Boise manager Gary Van Tol called upon reliever RHP Trey Lang who struck out five over his two innings of work including strikeouts of SS Franklin Barreto, DH Max Pentecost and 1B Ryan McBroom (the 3-4-5 hitters) in the top of the 9th setting the stage for the Hawks to walk it off in the home half of the inning.
In the last of the 9th, Victoria, B.C. native Jesse Hodges would grab a base hit on a ball hit out to SS Franklin Barreto before advancing out to second base on a wild pitch from Canadians reliever RHP Adaric Kelly. With Hodges out at second base, Danny Canela hit a ball out to 2B Tim Locastro who couldn't handle the ball which let Hodges test the throw to the plate which was late giving Boise the 8-7 come from behind victory.
With the loss, Vancouver falls to 3-6 (.333) on the second half and remain at the bottom of the North Division with 29 games remaining.
Vancouver returns to Memorial Stadium in Boise, ID on Thursday, July 31st at 6:15pm as RHP Miguel Castro (5-2) gets the ball trying to even up this series.
