Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers managed ten hits but only two runs as they lost 5-2 to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Eric Van Slyke notched a complete game victory for the Cracker-Cats allowing only one earned run while striking out seven and walking just one. The Vipers scattered their hits throughout the game and ended up leaving seven runners on base with four of those being in scoring position. Former Viper Jose Morban continued to crush his old squad going two-for-four with three runs batted in. With the loss the Snakes are now 10-7 in the second half and a half game behind Edmonton for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Marcus Nettles led off the game with a walk and following a Ruddy Yan single moving him to third base he scored on a Carlos Arroyo run batted in groundout for the 1-0 Edmonton lead.
The Cracker-Cats added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning with a Joe Jiannetti walk and a Morban two run homerun for the 3-0 advantage.
Calgary got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double from Felix Jose, Nelson Castro base hit, and Travis Drader RBI infield single for the 3-1 score.
That run was grabbed back in the top of the fifth frame with a Jon Pasieka single and back-to-back two outs base knocks by Yan and Arroyo for the 4-1 lead.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the inning as the Vipers scratched across a run thanks to a Darryl Brinkley single, stolen base of second, passed ball to advance him to third, and a Jorge Mejia RBI groundout to cut the lead back down to two runs at 4-2.
Edmonton regained their three run lead in the top of the eighth inning with another Jiannetti walk and a RBI triple by Morban for the 5-2 score.
Joe Sergent (2-2) recorded his second consecutive loss in tossing seven innings and giving up four runs.
