Russell Takes Game Five

August 1, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Reno Silver Sox News Release

Starting pitcher for the Silver Sox, Steve Russell, threw a gem until the ninth inning as the Sox (5-9) took game five from the Outlaws (7-9) in a 5-4 victory in Reno last night.

Russell (5-7) had his best game of the season as he threw his first complete game of the season, and nearly had his first shutout of the season. Only allowing three hits until the ninth inning, Russell was all business as he looked to shutout the Outlaws. Though Chico would sully Russell?s game, it was Russell who pulled through for the win in the end. Russell allowed four runs off six hits, walking two and striking out eight.

The Sox scored four of their runs off homeruns. LF Ross McCoy knocked in the first two-run bomb in the second. McCoy was 1-for-3 with a couple of RBIs and a run. 1B Ryan Brown would go on to hit a rocket over the center field wall in the fourth that would bring the score to 4-0 Sox. Brown had a spectacular night going 3-for4 with two RBIs and two runs. C Adam Geery knocked in the Silver Sox fifth run when he doubled in the fourth to bring in Madrid.

The Outlaws made a four run rally off a tired Russell in the ninth, but it wasn?t enough as Russell was determined to salvage the series with Chico. The Silver Sox ended 2-3 in the five game series and look to pick things up when St. George visits for the first time this season in a three game series that begins tonight at 7 P.M.
