Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - San Jose pounded out 10 runs on eight extra-base hits against Inland Empire to cruise to a 10-4 win Wednesday night. Scott Van Slyke reached 100 RBIs with a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to become the first player in franchise history to record at least 20 home runs, 40 doubles, and 100 RBIs in a single season.
66ers starter Justin Miller gave up a run in the first, with Roger Kieschnick lacing a double to left that scored Thomas Neal from first.
The Sixers came back for a short-lived lead in the fourth. After Van Slyke singled, Andres Perez lined a double to left to bring him home. Then, with two outs in the inning, manager Carlos Subero decided to roll the dice with a delayed double steal with Perez at third and Preston Mattingly at first. Perez was able to race home before Mattingly was tagged out in a rundown between first and second for the 2-1 lead.
The Giants quickly reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the fifth on an RBI triple by Darren Ford and a sac fly by Nick Noonan, allowing Ford to score from third.
San Jose (89-46) expanded on their lead with four more runs in the sixth and three more in the ninth to make it 10-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, the 66ers were able to cause some damage against T.J. Brewer in his second inning of work. Garett Green led off with a walk and Van Slyke followed with his 23rd homer of the season to bring the score to 10-4. Perez and Steven Caseres both singled before Brewer ended the damage by inducing a strikeout and back-to-back fielder's choices.
Paul Oseguera (6-7, 4.00) went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and a hit batter with 8 strikeouts, for the win.
Miller (0-6, 7.42) gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks with a strikeout over 5 1/3 innings for the loss.
Inland Empire (57-78) remains three games behind Rancho Cucamonga for the last playoff spot after the Quakes dropped their second straight game to Visalia, 3-1.
