San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants matched a season-high with six doubles and two triples in a 10-4 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Wednesday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park to extend their win streak to seven games. C.J. Ziegler pounded out four hits and drove home three runs to lead a balanced Giants offensive attack while Paul Oseguera earned the win on the mound after a solid seven-inning performance. The win improves San Jose's second half record to 47-18 - just one victory shy of the team record for most wins in a half.
Ziegler (4-for-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI) and Darren Ford (3-for-6, 2B, 3B, RBI) both delivered big nights at the plate as part of a 15-hit Giants offensive output. Thomas Neal (2-for-4) and Nestor Rojas (2-for-5, 2B) also contributed multi-hit games. Eight of the nine starters picked-up at least one hit.
Oseguera (6-7) allowed five hits and two runs (both earned) during his stint on the mound. He struck out eight and walked none. The reigning California League Pitcher of the Week began his outing by retiring eight consecutive Inland Empire hitters in addition to setting down six in a row to end his evening.
The 66ers led briefly in the contest scoring twice against Oseguera in the bottom of the fourth inning to move in front by a 2-1 margin. San Jose though immediately answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Ziegler began the inning with a single into center field before Shane Jordan grounded into a fielder's choice. Ford followed with a line drive to the fence in center field for a triple as Jordan came home with tying run. Nick Noonan then delivered a sacrifice fly to right plating Ford to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.
San Jose took control of the game in the top of the sixth as they sent eight batters to the plate and scored four times. Conor Gillaspie led off with a single before Brian Bocock drew a one-out walk to put runners on first and second. Jake McCarter was then summoned from the bullpen to replace starting pitcher Justin Miller and the reliever promptly allowed a two-run double to the wall in left center field off the bat of Ziegler to make it 5-2. Two batters later, Ford hit a sharp ground ball to third base that bounced past Garett Green for an error as Ziegler scored. Then Noonan belted an RBI triple to deep left center extending the Giants lead to 7-2.
San Jose continued their extra-base hit barrage in the top of the ninth as after Gillaspie drew a one-out walk, Rojas, Bocock and Ziegler each came through with doubles. Rojas' double off the fence in center field put runners on second and third before Bocock's double down the left field line scored a pair. Ziegler then hit his second double when he drove a fly ball off the warning track in left center as Bocock scored the Giants' 10th and final run of the night.
T.J. Brewer (2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) relieved Oseguera to begin the bottom of the eighth and worked a perfect first inning out of the bullpen. In the ninth, Scott Van Slyke belted a two-run homer to bring the 66ers to within 10-4 before consecutive singles from the next two hitters put runners on first and second with none out. However, Brewer was able to limit the damage as he struck out Preston Mattingly and then back-to-back fielder's choice ground ball outs with Jaime Ortiz and Alex Garabedian at the plate ended the game.
Oseguera was impressive during his start not allowing a hitter to reach base until Christian Lara singled with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth, Van Slyke singled with one out before Perez doubled him home with a line drive into the left field corner. Then with two outs and runners at the corners, Perez was able to score when the trail runner, Mattingly, got himself into a rundown. Mattingly was eventually tagged out to end the inning, but after Perez had crossed the plate as Inland Empire took a 2-1 lead.
Oseguera then pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Giants ahead by one before perfect sixth and seventh innings ended his outing.
San Jose scored their first run of the evening in the top of the first on Roger Kieschnick's two-out, RBI double into the left field corner.
Notes: San Jose improved their overall record to 89-46 ... The Giants have won the first two games of the series and are 3-2 against Inland Empire this season ... Kieschnick's RBI was his 107th of the year to move into sole possession of third place on San Jose's single-season RBI list ... Rich Aldrete (1988) is second with 108 RBI's ... Ford is 13-for-18 (.722) with eight runs scored and five RBI's in his last four games ... Oseguera has struck out 23 with no walks over his last two starts (16 IP) ... The Giants have played seven consecutive errorless games (all wins) ... San Jose would have to finish with at least a 2-3 mark in their last five regular season games to break the team record for most wins in a half (1988, 48-24 in second half).
On Deck: The Giants will look for a three-game sweep of the 66ers when the teams conclude their series on Thursday evening. First pitch at Arrowhead Credit Union Park is scheduled for 7:05 PM. David Mixon (2-1, 3.63 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Inland Empire is expected to counter with Miguel Sanfler (1-0, 5.82 ERA).
