September 2, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Inland Empire 66ers right fielder Scott Van Slyke was named to the 2009 California League post season All-Star Team, the league announced today.
Van Slyke, selected as a designated hitter, is the lone 66ers representative on the team, which was selected by the league's coaching staffs and broadcasters. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season with Inland Empire in 2009. He is hitting .293 with 22 home runs and 96 RBIs while playing a team-high 128 games. His 42 doubles are tied for the league lead, he is fourth in the circuit in RBIs and tied for third with 68 extra-base hits.
Van Slyke, from Ladue, Mo., is also on the brink of becoming the first member of an exclusive club. With four runs batted in over the final seven games, Van Slyke will become the first player in franchise history with 20 home runs, 100 RBIs and 40 doubles. He is only the third player in team history with 40 doubles in a season and his next double will set a new franchise mark.
Selected by the Dodgers in the 14th round of the 2005 draft, Van Slyke hit .251 with 11 home runs, 100 RBIs and 40 doubles in his first four professional seasons (243 games) before this year.
He has played 120 of 128 games in right field, where he has been one of the league's best outfielders. With 18 outfield assists, he is tied for second among outfielders, one shy of Lake Elsinore's Danny Payne.
Van Slyke became the first California Leaguer with two five-hit games in one season since Pablo Sandoval in 2007 after recording five-hit games April 25 at Lake Elsinore and May 7 at High Desert.
Alex Liddi of High Desert was named the league's Most Valuable Player and Craig Clark of San Jose was tabbed Pitcher of the Year. San Jose's Roger Kieshnick earned Rookie of the Year honors and High Desert manager Jim Horner was crowned Manager of the Year.
The 66ers continue their final homestand of the season tonight as the San Jose Giants visit Arrowhead Credit Union Park to begin a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Dodgers starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda will make a rehab start for the 66ers tonight. Tonight is $2 Tuesday, with $2 tickets, $2 parking and $2 beers. For tickets, visit the ticket office at 280 South E Street in San Bernardino.
