JetHawks' Road Woes Continue

September 2, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(ADELANTO, CA) The Lancaster JetHawks' disappointing road trip continued last night in Adelanto as the JetHawks dropped their eighth staight game on the trip, falling 6-2 to the High Desert Mavericks. The Mavericks got a great start from Michael Pineda and stellar relief innings from a trio of bullpen arms, and a big fifth inning was enough to put the JetHawks away 6-2. With the loss, Lancaster - which had been in the Cal League playoffs the past two seasons - was officially eliminated from postseason contention.

Michael Pineda continued his comeback from an elbow injury with four and two thirds innings of one-run baseball. He allowed just three hits and struck out seven. His offense got on the board for him in the second inning when newly named Cal League MVP Alex Liddi doubled in Carlos Peguero.

The JetHawks tied the game in the third with a little small ball. Craig Corrado opened the frame with a double to right field and advanced to third on a perfect sacrifice bunt from J.B. Shuck. Ebert Rosario then brought the run in with a grounder to shortstop.

Liddi seized the lead back in the third with another RBI single to right that scored Tyson Gillies. Jon Gaston gunned down Edilio Colina at home plate on the play, and the lead was 2-1. But the fifth inning broke the game wide open. Gillies again led off with an infield single before Colina singled. Both moved up a base on a Jamie McOwen groundout, and Peguero hit a sacrifice fly to center. Liddi was intentionally walked but Brent Johnson singled home Colina. Joe Dunigan then hit a broken bat single to right to score Johnson and Liddi, before being picked off to finally end the inning.

Koby Clemens got one back for the JetHawks with his 21st home run in the sixth inning. The drive over the center field wall gave Clemens 117 RBI. It would be the last offense for the JetHawks.

The two clubs resume the series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM in Adelanto. Leandro Cespedes (8-9, 4.92) squares off against Stephen Hensley (8-3, 4.44). The radio broadcast can be heard live on Magic 1340 AM and online at www.JetHawks.com beginning at 6:50 PM.
