San Antonio Missions News Release
Peter Van Gansen finished a homer short of the cycle in leading San Antonio to a 5-4 win over Frisco Saturday night before a sellout Wolff Stadium crowd of 7,173.
The RoughRiders jumped out to a quick two-run lead Saturday in the first against lefty Jerry Keel with a homer by catcher Jose Trevino.
In the bottom of the second against Brett Martin, San Antonio countered with a two-run rally of its own on one play as a Van Gansen infield single was coupled with a throwing error by first baseman Correlle Prime.
Prime atoned for the error in the third, giving the 'Riders the lead back with a double to right.
San Antonio took its first lead in the fourth with another two-run frame. Van Gansen ignited the rally with a leadoff double. Auston Bousfield tied the game at three when he followed with a triple down the right-field line. The Missions would go ahead 4-3 when Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in Bousfield with a groundout to short.
The one-run advantage would not hold for long as Trevino took a 1-1 pitch from Keel (2-0) over the wall in left in the fifth. The homers were the first of 2018 for Trevino, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day.
Fortunately for the Missions, Van Gansen had another hit in him. Facing new pitcher Adam Parks in the sixth, Van Gansen led off with a triple. San Antonio would take the lead for good when Bousfield followed with a groundout to short. Van Gansen would get his shot at the cycle in the eighth, but Ryne Slack retired the infielder on strikes.
The bullpen trio of Eric Yardley, Brad Wieck and Jose Castillo (5th save) combined on the final eight outs in closing out Frisco and giving San Antonio its 10th straight win. The streak is the club's longest since 2012.
San Antonio (24-10) and Frisco (7-27) continues its four-game series Saturday with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Lake Bachar will get the ball for the Missions in his Double-A debut, while the 'Riders counter with fellow righty Richelson Pena (1-3, 4.21). Following the game, there will be a special fireworks show courtesy of Bud Light.
