Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY-The Tri-City ValleyCats are back in the win column after winning 7-3 over the Vermont Expos before 4,285 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The ValleyCats got on the board early due to a nice effort by Mario Garza. He poked a two-run double into leftfield that put Tri-City ahead 2-0.

The ValleyCats would lead by two until the top of the third inning when starter Rory Shortell got into some trouble. He gave up back-to-back singles to Brandon Conway and Jose Contreras.

Shortell came back to strike out the next two Vermont hitters. Then Marvin Lowrance singled, Edgardo Baez walked and manager Gregg Langbehn lifted Shortell in favor of Andrew Alvarado.

All-in-all Shortell did not pitch all that badly. In two and two-thirds innings, Shortell have up two runs on two hits while walking just two. Shortell's problem was a high pitch count. The right-hander is still being closely monitored after coming back from Tommy John surgery.

Andrew Alvarado came in to relieve him and fired an inning and a third of one run ball.

The ValleyCats plated two runners in the third inning thanks to a fielder's choice by Jonny Ash. Then in the fifth inning, Mario Garza poked a hanging breaking ball by Francisco Sandoval over the leftfield wall for a two-run homer.

Garza finished 2-4 with a double, home run, and 4 RBI's.

In the ninth inning, the ValleyCats got an insurance run to cross home plate. Lou Santangelo singled, then Francisco Caraballo struck out. Chris Clark walked, and Luke Barganier singled. That was enough for Francisco Sandoval, as the right-hander was relieved in favor of Isiah Wright. After Wright retired Wilner Alvarez on one pitch, Drew Sutton walked to push across Santangelo. The lead was 7-3 in favor of the ValleyCats.

The ValleyCats open up a brief two game series against Lowell Saturday night. Ronnie Martinez gets his fourth start of the year for Tri-City.
