
Vacek Earns Sixth Save, Colts win 6-5

San Angelo, Texas--- The San Angelo Colts (23-10) took the first of a four game series with the Coastal Bend Thunder (17-16) as Chace Vacek earned his sixth save and Chandler Barnard snagged his league leading seventh win of the season. It was a one run contest that went to the Colts favor with a final score of 6-5.
In the top of the second inning, Coastal Bend's Bryan Vickers and Alfred Joseph singled. That placed runners at the corners for Kevin Butler. Butler lifted a fly ball to deep right center field scoring Vickers and giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
The Colts tied the ballgame after a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jason Landreth hit his ninth homer of the season over the left center field wall knotting the game at one.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Nick Mahin began the inning with a walk. An attempted sacrifice bunt by Hunter Jobes transformed into a single as both runners were safe at first and second. Butch Ballez executed the sacrifice bunt as runners advanced to second and third. Thunder starter Frank James then threw a wild pitch as Nick Mahin reached home plate safely sliding in head first as the Colts took their first lead of the ballgame. With Jobes at third, Alex Hernnberger collected an infield single down the third base line, scoring Jobes as San Angelo led 3-1. It was Herrnberger's first hit and RBI of his professional baseball career. San Angelo continued to tack on runs as Ronnie Gaines lifted a lined shot down the left field for a three homerun driving in Herrnberger and Jason Diaz as the Colts plated five in the inning. After six innings were completed, the Colts were up 6-1.
The Thunder responded in the seventh. Facing Colts starter Chadler Barnard, Coastal Bend's offense strung together four hits including two doubles and a homerun adding four runs. The homer was a two run shot off of the bat of Manny Mejia making it a 6-5 ballgame.
In the top of the ninth inning, Thunder's Leivi Ventura reached second base representing the tying run. However Carlos Rodriguez went down swinging on a high fastball as Chace Vacek earned his sixth save of the season, preserving the 6-5 Colts victory.
Ronnie Gaines was just a double shy of the cycle. Gaines tripled, doubled, and slammed his fourth homer of the year, a three run shot. Hunter Jobes also had a three hit night with three singles and a run scored.
Chandler Barnard (7-0) earned his league leading seventh victory working six and 2/3 innings, giving up five runs and four strikeouts. The loss went to Frank James (2-1). Vacek completed his sixth save of the year,
San Angelo will continue their four game series with Coastal Bend tomorrow at Foster Field. It will be Sure Win Wednesday courtesy of Sherwin Williams.
