Glens Falls Dragons News Release
The Glens Falls Dragons entered Tuesday night's game with the Utica Blue Sox trying to gain some momentum after a 1-3 start to the season. The Dragons came into the contest 1-0 at the friendly confines of East Field, but that didn't matter to the Blue Sox as they cruised to a 14-2 victory.
The Dragons took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Trevor Smeeton led off with a walk against Utica starter Steve Yuran (Otterbein). Smeeton advanced to second on a passed ball and ended up scoring on a ground out by Drew Greenwood (Bellarmine).
The Blue Sox would respond in the top of the second. Kyle Winkler (Miami University) led off the frame by lining a double to left field just inside the bag at third off of Jeremy Norris (Grand Canyon) who got the start on the bump for Glens Falls. Winkler came in to score on a single by Franklin Jennings (Central Connecticut State). The Blue Sox would plate two more runs on Glens Falls throwing errors to grab the 3-1 lead.
In the third Joe Spitaleri (LIU Post) doubled to lead off the inning. Winkler then singled and Robbie Young (Maryville) walked to load the bases. Jennings then hit a grounder to first. Glens Falls tried to throw home to cut the runner down at the plate, but the throw went to the screen, allowing another run to cross the plate. Utica would pick up a third run on the play when a throw to third sailed into the outfield making the score 6-1. Dylan Hutcheson (Texas A & M Corpus Christie) then doubled to right to score Jennings to make it 7-1 Blue Sox.
Utica increased their lead in the sixth by scoring three runs with the benefit of only one hit. Again, Glens Falls miscues were a factor as the Blue Sox took advantage two wild pitches and a misplayed fly ball in right field to blow the game further open at 10-1.
The Blue Sox added four more runs in the eighth. Franklin had an RBI single. Jack Goertzen (Shippensburgh) smacked a two run double, and Jennings scored on a wild pitch to make it 14-1
The Dragons picked up a run in the eighth when Alex Chandler (St. Rose) doubled and scored on a single by Dave Hoffman (Siena).
Goertzen, Jennings and Winkler each had a pair of hits for Utica.
Yuran earned the win for the Blue Sox. Norris suffered the loss for Glens Falls.
The Dragons are back home tomorrow night against the Saugerties Stallions at 7:00 P.M.
