Mohawks Walk Off on Wild Pitch in 10th

Downey (Brockport) scored on a wild pitch thrown by Matt Jones (Manhattan) in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Amsterdam Mohawks a walk-off 3-2 win Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.

Nick Patten (Delaware) and Andrew Rouse (Marist) led the Mohawks offensively as each went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI.

Ben Contento (St. Bonaventure) and Austin Keen (Kentucky) matched each other for the first four innings before the Mohawks broke through in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Tristen Carranza (New Mexico State) reached on an error then advanced to third after a stolen base and passed ball. Rouse singled to drive in Carranza with the game's first run.

The Mohawks added insurance in the sixth when Downey singled with one out and stole second. Patten singled up the middle and Downey raced home from third to make it 2-0 Mohawks.

The Stallions kept it close and finally tallied runs in the eighth. Alex Thrower (Buffalo) and Carmine Giordano (Franklin Pierce) singled back-to-back with one out and advanced to second and third respectively on a Micheal Pfenninger (Manhattan) ground out. Adam Chase (Franklin Pierce) was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases for Micah Riddick (St. Bonaventure). Riddick singled, scoring both Thrower and Giordano to tie the game at two. The runs ended a streak of 16 innings without allowing a run for Amsterdam.

Both bullpens worked out of jams and kept their opposing offenses off the scoreboard for the next inning and a half. In the bottom of the tenth, Downey worked a one out walk before advancing to third on a Patten single that dropped just inside the right field line. With Joe Genord (South Florida) batting, the first pitch skipped to the right of Saugerties catcher Andy Karlan (Palm Beach State) and to the backstop, allowing Downey to score.

Both starters were impressive for their respective clubs. Contento went five innings, allowed one hit, a run (unearned), walked two, and struck out five. Keen pitched 5.1 scoreless innings for the Mohawks in which he surrendered four hits, walked four, and struck out three. The win went to Tim Naughton (NC State) who pitched two scoreless, hitless innings. He struck out four. The hard luck loss was charged to Jones who pitched three innings in relief, allowed one hit, one run, walked four, and struck out three.

With the win, Amsterdam handed Saugerties their first loss of the season, while the Mohawks improved to 2-3. They look to win a third straight when they play the Albany Dutchmen Wednesday night at Bob Bellizzi Field at 7:05 p.m. Saugerties seeks to get back to their winnings ways on Wednesday night when they travel to East Field to play the Glens Falls Dragons at 7 p.m.
