OVERVIEW: Utah looks to rebound from a last-second loss to divisional foe Las Vegas last weekend at the Delta Center, as a blocked field goal attempt in the games final ten seconds allowed the Gladiators to escape with a 49-47 victory. The Blaze are trying to break a two-game slide on the road at Tampa Bay. Utah holds a 2-2 road record in its expansion season. Tampa Bay is coming off a 51-61 loss at Georgia last weekend and looks to return to their winning ways at home, where they hold a 3-2 record. The matchup will mark the first between the two teams, but it marks the 11th time that head coaches Danny White and Tim Markum have gone head-to-head. This will be a battle between the two highest winning coaches in AFL history. Utah is currently tied for last place in the Western Division, but is only two games out of the divisional leader Arizona, who has come on strong, winning their last four games.

THE SERIES: This will mark the first meeting between the two teams. Blaze head coach DANNY WHITE is 4-7 coaching against Tampa Bay in his head coaching career, including 2-4 on the road. He is 3-7 against Tim Marcum in his career including 2-4 in the regular season.

WHAT'S AHEAD: The Blaze look to return home against two divisional opponents at the Delta Center on April 7 against division-leader Arizona and April 15 vs. Los Angeles. These two games will be pivotal in deciding the fate of the Western Division, a division currently separated by only two games from first place to last place.

NOTABLES: 2005 AFLWA Offensive Player of the Year, OS SIAHA BURLEY, is hoping to establish some new expansion records in 2006. Burley, who had 117 receptions for 1,542 yards and a league-leading 45 touchdowns in 2005, figures to be a threat to re-write the books... The expansion records Burley is currently chasing are held by former Detroit Fury OS ROBERT GORDON who tallied 125 receptions for 1,630 yards and 42 touchdowns in 2001... Burley is currently 2nd in the league lead with 78 catches, has a league-leading 1,090 yards, and is in 2nd place with 26 touchdowns for 156 points... Burley is currently attempting to break several major AFL single-season receiving records and is on pace for 139 receptions (MARCUS NASH, Las Vegas, 2004 holds the record at 154), 1,937 yards (CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER, Arizona, 1998 holds the AFL record at 1,982 yards) and 46 touchdowns (five players are currently tied with 46)... Burley set the single-game expansion record for receiving yards (259) and tied the single-game touchdown mark (6) in week three at the Delta Center against New York.

LAST WEEK:

BLOCKED FIELD GOAL DOUSES BLAZE, 49-47
Gladiators escape with close victory in the final seconds.

SALT LAKE CITY - With ten seconds remaining in the game, K STEVE VIDITECH'S 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked to seal the victory for the Las Vegas Gladiators, 49-47, in front of 14,472 fans at the Delta Center. The defeat marked the third home loss of the season by three points or less.

Utah had a chance to seal the victory in the final minute of the game after a crucial fourth-and-goal stand by the Blaze defense. The Blaze were able to drive the length of the field, but misfired on two consecutive passes to OS SIAHA BURLEY before the blocked field goal.

"We really felt like we came with a lot of energy tonight and played hard," said Blaze head coach and general manager DANNY WHITE. "In the end, they made the plays, and we didn't."

Blaze QB JASON GESSER, who made his second consecutive start and his first at home, finished the game completing 25-of-35 passes for 309 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. It was the first 300-yard game of his career.

Burley led the team with six catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns while piling up a total of 158 all-purpose yards. WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT tallied seven receptions for 70 yards and WR/DB TOM PACE had two touchdown receptions.

Las Vegas FB/LB MARLION JACKSON was named Offensive Player of the Game with seven carries for 27 yards and two touchdowns. DS T.J. HILL was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game after recording a game-high 11.0 tackles, while WR/DB ALERIC CLARK was named Ironman of the Game with four receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown along with one fumble recovery.

THE IFS...:
If Utah defeats Tampa Bay it would...
*Give Utah a winning road record. (3-2)
*Give Utah its first win against a Southern Division foe (1-0).
*Give Utah a winning record versus Tampa Bay all-time. (1-0)
*Give Utah a 4-6 all-time regular-season record.
*Help Utah break the three-team third place tie with San Jose and Los Angeles.
*Snap Utah's two-game losing streak.

THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 14th season
124-61 (.670) reg. season; 144-71 (.670) overall
4-7 career vs. Tampa Bay
White is currently in his 14th season as an AFL head coach and first with the Blaze. White has compiled a record of 142-68 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White, won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993. White officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. He played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys (1976-88) and helped lead the Cowboys to the postseason five times and won three NFC East titles during his tenure as starting QB. In his first year as a starter (1980), White set the club single-season record for touchdown passes (28) and then broke the record (29) in 1983. Those records still stand as the top two single-season marks in franchise history. He still owns eight Cowboy records and is the member of FOUR Halls of Fame (Arizona Sports, Arizona State, College Football and Arena Football).

Tampa Bay- Tim Marcum, 18th season
181-13 (.458) reg. season, 11-13 overall (.458)
0-0 career vs. Utah
Legendary AFL head coach Tim Marcum is in his 18th overall season as an AFL head coach and 12th with the Tampa Bay Storm. A charter member of the Arena Football League Hall of Fame. Marcum is the winningest head coach in Arena Football history. He has won seven AreanBowl titles and has coached in ten of the league's 19 ArenaBowls. Marcum is the only coach in Arena Football history to lead three different teams to ArenaBowl championships (Denver, Detroit, and Tampa Bay). He is a two-time recipient of the AFL Coach of the Year Award (1987 and 1998). He was the first coach in AFL history to win more than 100 games. Incredibly, Marcum's AFL clubs have advanced to the postseason in every year he has coached. Marcum won the ArenaBowl with the Tampa Bay Storm in 2003.

ARENA QB RATING: The debate has gone on for years in the AFL... Does the outdoor QB Rating really translate to the indoor game? In a game where possessions and completion percentage dictates whether you win or lose, we decided to come up with a different formula that puts more weight on "TD-INT ratio" and completion percentage and no emphasis on yardage. Here's how it works:

TD% = TDs divided by TDs + INT

ARENA QB FORMULA: Multiply the TD% by 2 and add the completion % and divide it all by 3.

Since the AFL is a different game, below is the current ranking of the top 10 QBs based on the rating system for AFL QBs:

QUARTERBACK TEAM COM% TDs INT TD % ARENA RATING
Clint Dolezel DAL 69.2% 62 5 92.5% 84.8%
Aaron Garcia NYD 77.1% 32 4 88.9% 84.9%
Matt D'Orazio CHI 69.2% 37 3 92.5% 84.7%
Matt Nagy GEO 69.6% 50 6 89.3% 82.7%
Joe Germaine UTA 67.7% 37 5 88.1% 81.3%
Nick Browder NYD 63.1% 17 2 89.5% 80.7%
Sonny Cumbie LAA 59.3% 24 3 88.9% 79.0%
Shane Stafford TBS 64.7% 49 8 86.0% 78.9%
Mark Grieb SJS 65.4% 45 8 84.9% 78.4%
John Dutton COL 61.6% 50 10 83.3% 76.1%
