
USA Weekly: U18s Earn First NCAA Win; Five Games on Deck for Weekend

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - USA Hockey's National Team Development Program hits the ice for five games this weekend after wrapping up the previous week with its first NCAA victory of the season.
The NTDP U18s split this week between NCAA and USHL competition. Their NCAA series continues on Friday evening (Oct. 18) as the team travels to East Lansing, Michigan, to take on the Michigan State Spartans at 7:00 p.m. ET. The U18s will then return to USA Hockey Arena for a pair of matchups against the USHL's Madison Capitols on Saturday (Oct. 19) and Sunday (Oct. 20).
Sunday afternoon's contest, a 4:00 p.m. ET start, is the second annual sensory-friendly game at USA Hockey Arena, presented by the Autism Alliance of Michigan and Hines Park Lincoln. Fans attending the game can expect limited sounds and videos throughout the arena, a general admission seating section for maximum comfortability, available quiet rooms throughout the arena and a modified concessions menu.
The U17s play a pair of games beginning Friday (Oct. 18) at home against Green Bay before traveling to Chicago to face the Steel on Saturday (Oct. 19) evening. Friday night's game is the first $5 Fun Night of the 2019-20 NTDP season. Enjoy the fun of Team USA hockey with the additions of face painting, a selfie station and games along the concourse. The U18s played a trio of collegiate games last week that started with a 5-0 defeat in Big Rapids, Michigan, on Tuesday (Oct. 8) to Ferris State. The team traveled to the Northeast for their weekend matchups against Providence College (Oct. 12) and Holy Cross (Oct. 13). Forward Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colo.) scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Friars. Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) and Brett Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored two goals apiece to close the week with a 4-2 win over the Crusaders.
The U17 team hosted the Musekgon Lumberjacks Friday night (Oct. 11) at USA Hockey Arena. Defenseman Ty Gallagher (Clarkston, Mich.) picked up his fourth goal of the season in the 8-1 loss. The 17s completed the home-and-home set in Muskegon on Saturday (Oct. 12), falling 7-4 despite a two-goal performance from Luke Hughes (Manchester, N.H.). Forward Jack Hughes (Westwood, Mass.) added a pair of assists and Justin Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) tallied his seventh score of the season.
