
Upper Valley Pitchers Stifle Sanford in Loss

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - The Sanford Mainers took on the Upper Valley Nighthawks at the Maxfield Sports Complex on Friday. Upper Valley went in front early and didn't give up the lead in a 4-1 win over Sanford.
Garret Keough (Georgetown) took the start for Sanford, and wasn't able to get out of the third inning. Keough left the start early after 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts in the losing decision.
Trailing by two runs in the fourth, the Mainers got on the board when Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) scored on a double play to cut the lead to 2-1. Other leaders on offense include Shane Paradine (Stony Brook) who went 2-4 with a pair of singles, Dom Freeberger (UNC-Asheville) with a single and Jonny Barditch (Manhattan College) with a single as well.
Brian Craven (Davidson), Jacob Cicone (Lafayette) and Joe Joe Rodriguez (St. John's) pitched out of the bullpen for Sanford for the last 5.1 innings. Both Craven and Cicone gave up a run, but combined for four strikeouts. Rodriguez threw one inning, giving up one hits but not allowing any runs.
Upper Valley scored two more runs of insurance in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the 4-1 win.
Sanford hits the road again tomorrow against the Vermont Mountaineers, where the Mainers will resume a suspended game from July 7 and then play a scheduled nine inning game.
