D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (November 12, 2009) - D.C. United and its non-profit arm, United for D.C., today announced the United Soccer Club Fall "Play Date" and Mini-Tournament will be rescheduled due to inclement weather. The tournament will now be played on Thursday, November 19 at the RFK Auxiliary Field. Seven of the ten sites participating in the United Soccer Club will field teams in the event running from 4-7 p.m.
The tournament features six sites from Washington D.C. and one site from Montgomery County, Md. The sites participating include Ketcham Elementary School, THEARC, and Barry Farm Recreation of Ward 8, Harrison Recreation of Ward 3, Parkview Recreation of Ward 1, Turkey Thicket Recreation of Ward 5, and Longbranch Community Center. Each team will play three 20-minute games. The tournament caps off an eight-week season in which participants were introduced to the game of soccer and practiced their soccer skills in bi-weekly sessions.
United Soccer Club's Fall Mini-Tournament will include special player appearances and a visit by the D.C. United mascot, Talon. All players are awarded medals and goody bags for their participation. Food will also be provided at the event.
United Soccer Club, sponsored by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Volkswagen and adidas, was born from a request in Ward 8 for opportunities for children to play organized soccer. In the spring of 2006, United for D.C. launched its own after school soccer program, in partnership with D.C. Parks and Recreation at Barry Farm Recreation Center. The program ran for eight weeks, teaching fundamental skills and hosting games and scrimmages.
