D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (January 8, 2004) â D.C. United today recognized the second anniversary of the club's charitable arm, United for D.C. In year three of existence, United for D.C. will expand its signature programs while implementing a grant-making component to its operations. To help fund these initiatives, United for D.C. will add a third major fundraising event to its schedule, the Inaugural United Awards Reception, and will seek financial donations from private foundations and area philanthropic corporations.
"I am pleased to celebrate United for D.C.'s second birthday with the charity's donors and supporters as well as the entire D.C. United family," said United for D.C. Executive Director Catherine Marquette. "As we enter year three, the organization is prepared to be a much more visible and active partner to the Nation's Capital. We are excited about our programming and our announcement of a grant-making cycle. Each day, we move closer to accomplishing our goal of making a long-lasting impact on our community."
The continued operation of specific programs by United for D.C. in conjunction with area organizations, school systems, sponsors and other groups is a key activity for the non-profit organization. United for D.C. continues to develop programming that impacts that community, addressing specific needs related to reading and literacy, healthy lifestyles and life skills, while at the same time branding United for D.C. as a resource for the Washington, DC area and a good community neighbor. Current initiatives include: United Reads (and the United RIF School Program), Make Sun Safety Your Goal, Kicks for Kids and new for 2004, a RFK Stadium 24/7 field.
In addition, United for D.C. plans to establish a grant-making component to its operations this year as well as an annual contribution fund. The charity will commit up to $25,000 of its annual budget to award grants to area non-profit organizations within the Washington, D.C. area and which focus on using the sport of soccer to impact positively the lives of local youth above and beyond what is accomplished on the soccer pitch. United for D.C. will also reserve $10,000 of its budget to make smaller contributions to similar organizations that fit the same description. Specific details will follow in the near future.
Fundraising initiatives for the 2004 calendar year include three events (the Second Annual First XI Charity Kick-off Luncheon, the Third Annual United for D.C. Celebrity Golf Tournament and the Inaugural United for D.C. Awards Reception) and numerous smaller activities, including Man-of-the-Match on-line jersey auctions, the Name in Lights donation program and various other auctions and events. In addition, united for D.C. accepts financial donations from private foundations and community-minded corporations to directly fund its programming.
