United earn a hard fought point in Carson
June 22, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release
(CARSON, California) New Mexico United ended a two-game losing streak, as they drew with LA Galaxy II, 1:1 on Saturday evening. Both squads brought grit to the midfield, and plenty of attacking potency, but neither brought enough to win all 3 points.
Galaxy II's Nicholas DePuy struck first for the hosts when a cross and head-on bounced fortuitously in the box. His right-footed strike from point blank range was unstoppable. NM United's Kevaughn Frater equalized in the 40th. United winger Daniel Bruce picked off a Galaxy pass in the midfield, and squared a beautiful ball up for the Jamaican after driving into the 18 yard box. Frater lined a low laser past Galaxy keeper, Justin vom Steeg. United controlled nearly 56% of possession in the first half, and put twice as many shots on target, but the first half ended knotted at 1:1.
United once again controlled possession in the second half, but Galaxy II brought a vigorous offensive focus to the final 45 minutes, and outshot United 9-2. However, only one of their attempts was on frame, and United goalkeeper Cody Mizell dealt with it neatly. New Mexico only managed two shots in the second half, and neither tested vom Steeg.
United are on a much needed break until they visit the Real Monarchs on July 6.
