D.C. United News Release

WASHINGTON, DC (August 4, 2004) - D.C. United announced today the Wireless Foundation's CALL to PROTECT® program as the benefiting organization for the United Cellular Telephone Drive, in place for each of the club's August home games. On August 11th and 14th, as part of the organization's overall United Drives for D.C. campaign, United will be collecting new and used cellular phones and accessories, such as chargers, belt clips, carrying cases and headsets, in support of the CALL to PROTECT® program which provides wireless phones with airtime and cash grants to those working on the campaign to end domestic violence.

"We are pleased to support the efforts of the Wireless Foundation," said Catherine Marquette, D.C. United's Director of Community & Fan Relations and Executive Director of United For D.C. "Through its various affiliated programs, the Wireless Foundation serves a multitude of worthy causes to which we are happy to contribute. As in the past, we are confident that our fans and members of the Washington, DC community will feel the same and lend a helping hand."

Each month during the 2004 Major League Soccer season, D.C. United collects items at each home match to benefit Washington, DC area non-profit organizations. United collects items outside of Gate A beginning two hours before kickoff and concluding fifteen minutes into the first half. Fans who donate an item receive a commemorative key chain and a "Buy One, Get One" ticket voucher good for any D.C. United regular season home games.

All components collected by D.C. United will benefit the Wireless Foundation's local CALL to PROTECT® campaign in the Washington, DC area. The company provides wireless phones with airtime and financial grants to organizations working to end domestic violence. To date, the wireless industry has donated more than 36,000 wireless phones and contributed cash grants totaling $1.7 million to help the campaign to end domestic violence.

"The Wireless Foundation is extremely grateful to D.C. United for its support of the CALL to PROTECT® program," said David S. Diggs, Executive Director, the Wireless Foundation. "Through partnerships such as this, the Foundation can expand its efforts and provide even more resources to support the campaign to end domestic violence. "

During the month of July, United collected children's toys. In three home matches, nearly 100 toys were collected to benefit the Children's National Medical Center. In June, over 350 books were collected to support children of United for D.C.'s United Reads Program. In May, more than 100 canned food items were donated to Martha's Table and the Capital Area Foods Bank and, in April, more than 450 pieces of soccer equipment were distributed to DC SCORES and the Latin American Youth Center.
