United acquires Zach Wells and 2009 MLS SuperDraft pick from Houston for Bobby Boswell

Washington, D.C. (December 12, 2007) - D.C. United announced today the club has acquired goalkeeper Zach Wells and a conditional pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft from Houston in exchange for defender Bobby Boswell.

"We are excited to be acquiring such a solid goalkeeper with a huge upside," said United General Manager Dave Kasper. "Zach has been on our radar for several years, and we believe he will have a huge impact with our club for years to come."

Wells joins D.C. United after capturing two straight MLS Cups as a member of the Dynamo. The 26-year old did not see any time between the pipes in 2006, but made four appearances (three starts) during this past season's campaign, earning two shutouts, a goals-against average of 0.32 and compiling a 2-0-1 record. Prior to his time in Houston, the Costa Mesa, CA native spent two seasons with the MetroStars (now known as the New York Red Bulls). While there, he saw time in 19 games (all starts), collected four shutouts and put together a record of 6-6-4. His stay with the MetroStars was highlighted by a 14-save effort in a 0-0 draw with United, June 12, 2005. Wells has one cap for the U.S. Men's National Team, making his international debut as a second half substitute in a 4-0 win over Guatemala on February 19, 2006.

Boswell departs D.C. after three full seasons in the District. The 24-year old played in 80 total games (78 starts) while a member of the Black-and-Red, totaling four goals and four assists as a central defender. In 2006, the Tampa, FL native was named the to his first MLS All-Star team, to the MLS Best XI and as the MLS Defender of the Year. Boswell also played in five playoff games (four starts) while a member of United.
