Augusta GreenJackets News Release
CHARLESTON, SC: The Charleston Riverdogs (24-12) continued their success against the Augusta GreenJackets (20-15) on Thursday night as the Charleston bullpen held off Augusta once again in a 5-2 win for the Riverdogs.
After a pair of scoreless innings from Landon Leach for Augusta and Charleston starter Antonio Jimenez, the home run ball would strike in the third inning with Cal Conley connecting for his team-best sixth home run of the season to put the GreenJackets ahead 1-0 on the solo home run.
Right when it looked like Augusta was going to get through the third with the lead, the Riverdogs came back with two out damage on a home run from their shortstop Carson Williams who belted a two-run homer to left field to give Charleston their first lead at 2-1.
In the fourth, the Riverdogs would get some key runs to add to their lead as they scored three times, ignited by a pair of Augusta errors to open the inning. Michael Berglund, Gionti Turner, and Shane Sasaki all picked up RBI singles to extend the lead for Charleston to 5-1.
The bullpens took command for each team the rest of the way as Rob Griswold delivered three shutout frames from the fifth to the seventh inning, while Over Galue held the GreenJackets in check by keeping them off the board until the eighth when they manufactured a run on a groundout by Brandol Mezquita to trim the deficit to 5-2.
Miguel Pena took over for Griswold in the bottom half of the eighth and put a zero up on the scoreboard as he stranded a pair of Riverdogs to keep it a three-run game entering the ninth.
But the GreenJackets would be stumped once again as Galue finished off the ball game for Charleston by putting down Augusta in order in the final frame to give the Riverdogs their third consecutive victory over the GreenJackets, 5-2.
Antonio Jimenez was awarded the win for Charleston with Over Galue earning his first save of the season. Landon Leach finished with the loss for Augusta.
The offense was highlighted with multi-hit performances from Geraldo Quintero and Cal Conley, while Brandol Mezquita took his on-base streak to 27 games with a first-inning hit.
The GreenJackets are back on the diamond for another matchup with the Riverdogs on Friday night as Luis Vargas looks to settle the storm for Augusta versus Daiveyon Whittle of Charleston. First pitch of Friday's contest comes at 7:05 pm.
