Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Dionys Cesar scored from second on a two-out throwing error by Julian Benavidez in the top of the 8th inning to snap a tie ballgame, and the Yuma bullpen made the unearned run stand up as the Scorpions nipped the Chico Outlaws 8-7 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium...Yuma winning its third straight while handing the Outlaws their second straight defeat.
The Scorpions built a quick 4-0 lead, batting around in the top of the 1st against Chico starter Scott Navarro - back-to-back RBI singles by Maikel Jova and Jose Rodriguez put Yuma on the board; the inning was capped off by a two-out, two-run single by Ryan Barba. The Outlaws put up a pair of runs in their half of the 1st, as Scorpions starter Mike Megrew walked five batters - one with the bases loaded - and uncorked a pair of wild pitches, one allowing Steve Boggs to score from third. Chico took advantage of Megrew's wildness again in the 2nd inning, as Eric Pringle walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. A.J. Valentine made it a three run game in the 3rd inning, bombing a home run to right with a man aboard to put Yuma up 6-3...the Outlaws answered back with a run in the bottom of the 3rd when Bryan Silverman doubled home Tony Torcato...but the Scorpions made it 7-4 in the 4th when Navarro walked Rodriguez with the bases loaded, forcing home Yosvany Almario.
Silverman's RBI single in the bottom of the 5th brought Chico back to within two...then in the 7th the Outlaws pulled even when Matt Ceriani singled off Yuma reliever Mike Martin to plate Benavidez and Silverman. The Scorpions, shut down offensively by Chico reliever Ben Shockey, went back ahead in the 8th with the run that turned out to be the game winner - Pete Farina reached on a one-out error by Torcato and advanced to second on Cesar's single to left. Almario followed with a high chopper to third - Benavidez gloved the ball, stepped on third to force Farina and then threw across the diamond to try to complete an inning-ending double play, but the ball whizzed by Torcato at first and rolled up the right field line, allowing Cesar to score and make it 8-7. Now back in front, Yuma's bullpen sealed the deal - Martin tossed a scoreless 8th inning and James Garcia got the final three Outlaws batters in the 9th to lock down the Scorpions seventh victory in eight tries over Chico this season.
Martin (4-1) got credit for the victory, with Shockey (1-1) taking the loss despite allowing just one unearned run and two hits in five innings of relief work. Yuma piled up 11 hits en route to the win, with Cesar, Rodriguez and Rich Janeway collecting two hits apiece...Silverman finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace Chico's nine hit attack. Saturday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 13-18 in the second half and 28-45 overall...the Scorpions improved to 17-12 in the second half and 41-31 on the year. Chico tries to avoid the sweep as they send right-hander Greg Bicknell (4-3) to the mound in Sunday's series finale; Yuma will throw righty Jorge Perez (6-3). Game time is 6:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
