Jorge Perez of Yuma and Eddy Garabito of St. George win GBL Week 10 Player of the Week

(Dublin, CA. August 5, 2008) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that RHP Jorge Perez of the Yuma Scorpions has been named Safeway Pitcher of the Week while SS Eddy Garabito of the St. George Roadrunners has been named Safeway Player of the Week for their performances during the tenth week of the 2008 Golden Baseball League season, ending August 3rd.
Perez, 32, 6-4, 220 lbs is a right-handed pitcher who began his professional career when he was signed by the Toronto blue Jays out of his hometown of San Pedro de Marcoris in the Dominican Replublic in 1997. He spent six seasons in the Toronto and Milwaukee farms systems before being released. He signed to play with the Canadian Baseball League in 2003 and was one of the leading pitcher in that league when it folded mid-season. Joining the Yuma Scorpions for the inaugural season of the GBL in 2005 he has gone on to become the wnningest pitcher in Scorpion history as he currently has won 24 games for Yuma over the last three seasons. His performance in the last week included a complete game 4-hit shutout win over the Long Beach Aramda. The first shutout of the season in the GBL, he struck out 9 and walked just 1 and moved the Scorpions into first place in the second half pennant race.
Garabito 29, 5-8, 175, was originally signed by the Baltimore Orioles out of his hometown of Manrezza in the Dominican Republic in 1996. He moved quickly through the Orioles' farm system reaching AAA before being acquired by the Colorado Rockies. Playing in AAA for Colorado in 2006 he was called up to the major league club and played 42 games for the Rockies and posted a big league batting average of .307. Traded back to Baltimore he spent the next two seasons in AAA in Ottawa and Mexico. Signed by the St. George Roadrunners
