Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawk forward Derek Arnold will be a "Hawk" for the foreseeable future, with his commitment to play for the UMass-Lowell River Hawk program once his time in Waterloo is concluded.
The Boston-area native is playing his second USHL season and is the Black Hawks' Assistant Captain. As a rookie in 2008-2009, Arnold contributed 20 goals and 32 points. This season, he has surpassed his assist mark from a year ago in just 24 games, while also being asked on several occasions to move from his natural position back to defense. Away from the rink, Arnold founded "Arnie's Army" in November, a way for fans to channel their support of the Black Hawks into contributions to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County.
"Arnie is the kind of player any coach would enjoy working with," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "He has natural ability but knows he can make himself better. During his time in Waterloo, Derek has proven that he is willing to do the work needed to enhance his skills."
With his decision, Arnold becomes the 13th member of the 2009-2010 to commit to an NCAA Division I hockey program.
Arnold will be the first Black Hawk to play for UMass-Lowell since P.K. O'Handley started coaching in Waterloo prior to the 2002-2003 season. It may be the first time ever that a player has advanced from Waterloo to Lowell.
