April 26, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF)
Evansville BlueCats News Release
The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce that John Winchester has received honorable mention honors as UIF Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Lexington Horsemen last weekend at Roberts Stadium. The BlueCats linebacker tallied 10 solo tackles and 7 assisted tackles including 3.5 tackles for a loss in the game. His 13.5 total tackles in the game is the second best performance in team history and is only one-half tackle shy of the team record he already owns. He also recovered a fumble in the game against the Horsemen.
Currently in the 2006 season, Winchester has played in four games with the BlueCats and leads the league with an average of 10 tackles per game, nearly two more per game than the next closest player. He also leads the league with 10.5 tackles for a loss this season. He's recorded one interception and recovered one fumble while leading the BlueCats defense.
During his first few games with the BlueCats, he's already made his mark on the BlueCats record book. He owns the team record for tackles in a single game with 14 against the Ohio Valley Greyhounds in Week Two and he also tied the team record of 4 tackles for a loss in a single game against the Raptors in Week One.
This is the third time Winchester has received honorable mention honors for Player of the Week. He also received honorable mention honors from the UIF in Week 1 and Week 2. He's been recognized by the league office for his superior play in 3 of the 4 games he's played in 2006. John Winchester was officially scouted by the coaches and staff of the indoor football scouting bureau, the official scouting service of the Evansville BlueCats.
The UIF Offensive Player of the Week for Week Five was Ohio Valley Greyhounds quarterback Matt Kohn. The Defensive Player of the Week was Lexington's Champ Kelly, and the Special Teams Player of the Week was awarded to Dillon Pieffer from the Rock River Raptors.
Last season, Evansville BlueCats players received UIF Player of the Week honors a record 8 times. No other team in UIF history has had more Player of the Week awards and honorable mentions than Evansville.
The Evansville BlueCats will enjoy a bye week this week. John Winchester and the BlueCats will take on the Peoria Rough Riders on Saturday May 6th in Peoria, Illinois. Kickoff for the game at Peoria is scheduled for 7:05pm and the game can be heard on ESPN Radio 94.9.
