Tycoons rout Style in season opener

November 16, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Texas Tycoons News Release

Dallas, TX. Early in the fourth quarter of the ABA Texas Tycoons' season opening 133-100 win over the New Mexico Style at Thomas Coliseum, about a dozen kids in the crowd began to chant, "We want Bacon!" They were calling for Chris Bacon, a 26-year old, 6'10" "kid" from Nicolls State. After several minutes of chanting and with the voice of Tycoons PA announcer urging them on, the Tycoons coaches relented and put Bacon in the game.

Less than three minutes later, Bacon had scored 12 points including three consecutive field goals to give Texas a 31 point lead. With each bucket, Bacon pointed to his "posse" in the crowd and they cheered louder. "He's got that kind of personality," associate head Coach Chuck Webb said. "It's easy to see how he endears himself to people."

Although Bacon claimed - only half jokingly - the kids know him from BET video appearances and his friendship with Seattle SuperSonics forward Rashard Lewis, it's most likely the kids learned to love him at an appearance at Haltom Middle School which some of the kids attend.

Before Bacon's heroics, the Tycoons were led by Stan Blackmon with 20 points and Jermaine Green and Brandon Lee who each scored 18. Mack Callier led Texas with 15 rebounds and Jabari Johnson had 10 assists. The Tycoons host Mississippi Saturday at 7pm at Thomas Coliseum. Who knows how big the Bacon fan club will be by then.
