Texas Tycoons News Release
The Texas Tycoons today announced that the team's head coach, Jean-Paul Afif, has been given clearance to speak with other leagues regarding head coaching vacancies.
Afif navigated the Tycoons to a 21-3 record, falling to the eventual ABA champion Vermont Frost Heaves. The playoff loss marked the second time in consecutive seasons, that the Vermont franchise has prevented Texas from fulfilling championship aspirations. Regardless, Afif's accomplishments do not go unnoticed by the Tycoons or other teams in search of a head coach.
"It is well documented that we have recently closed the books on a very difficult ABA season off the court. However, I have received inquiries from several teams showing an interest in JP, and a few others within our organization. People tend to lose site of the fact that minor league basketball is about development. I have the responsibility of developing players and coaches. Although I hate to lose him, Afif deserves every bit of recognition that he is receiving. I wish him well," stated Mike Senters, Tycoons GM.
The Tycoons have been in constant communication with teams in the ABA's Northeast division. The status and league affiliation of what is known as the ABA's strongest cluster of teams, will weigh heavily upon the Tycoons' decision to return to the ABA or explore other options.
"Geographically, the CBA has two quality franchises in close proximity. The PBL is well funded, but has yet to reveal any plans for the South or provide any updates on the Dallas, Arkansas and Jacksonville organizations. I reserve comment on the ABA until Joe provides the actual plan for bonds and other criteria, to ensure an improvement upon last season's issues," added Senters. "There seems to be a growing interest in the off court maneuvers of minor league basketball. Stay tuned to what is shaping up to be a very entertaining off season."
