Bay Area Panthers News Release
The Panthers continue to fortify their defensive backfield with the re-signing of two-time IFL champion Bill Atkins.
"Bill is a hardworking, intelligent and versatile defensive back with a knack for always being in the right place," said Bay Area Head Coach Rob Keefe. "We are thrilled to have his leadership and championship pedigree back with us for another run at the title."
The former Minnesota-Duluth captain and Keefe have a winning history. Atkins played for Keefe at Northern Arizona in 2022 during the Wranglers' run to the title and followed Keefe to the Panthers for another IFL title in 2023. Each championship capped turnarounds from winning a single game the season before.
"Keefe and I talked about my goals and what I want to do in the future. We came to an agreement that this would be the best opportunity to showcase my game on the IFL stage and get to the next level," said Atkins.
Staying healthy is a priority for Atkins, who was slowed by nagging injuries, which limited him to 10 games in 2023.
"At this point of my career, I'm not going after massive improvements in strength," said Atkins. "This year is dedicated to movement, flexibility and being strong in certain positions. Those are my areas of focus and not as much lifting as in the past. I'm doing a lot of yoga and Pilates with isometrics to make me strong in key positions."
Atkins had his body primed for the stretch run and made his presence felt when it mattered most. In the IFL Championship Game against Sioux Falls, Atkins had an interception in the first half and came up with the game-icing play in the fourth quarter. Atkins reached back to deflect a pass that ended up in the hands of Marquise Bridges, whose pick-six gave the Panthers a two-score lead on the way to the title.
"The offense had run a similar play earlier in the game. They were using the same route concepts and tried to pull me in with an in-breaking route to throw the ball over my head," said Atkins. "I had to jump while I was in the back pedal position and my momentum took me out. I ended up tipping it and lying on my back. I was on the ground in pain, but I heard the crowd cheering when he (Bridges) took it to the house. That was pretty cool."
The defensive touchdown was part of a late-season surge that led to Bridges eventually signing with the Canadian Football League. Atkins says those are the kind of success stories that inspire him and other players in the IFL to chase their dreams.
"It goes to show how close we all are to getting the call from the next level," said Atkins. "I know how hard he worked and I'm super happy for him. I know with me putting in the same work can create the same opportunities."
For Atkins, the combination of a chance to advance and win a third straight title are key motivators to return to the Bay Area. The organization has created a successful and comfortable environment that has left a significant impression.
"I consider Morgan Hill to be my second home. That's how involved I was with the community...and visited there a few times in the off-season," said Atkins. "It's a great community and I could see myself eventually living there for some time post football. I enjoy being out in the community and supporting our team."
