Visalia Rawhide News Release
BAKERSFIELD â For the first time this season, the Oaks won at Bakersfield and in doing so broke a season-high five game losing streak. A bases loaded walk issued to Corey Slavik by Blaze reliever Chris Crawford broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning and allowed the Oaks to win, 3-2.
Gerrit Simpson pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on seven hits to win for the third time this season. Alex Serrano retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his first save.
Ryan Shealy made Bakersfield pay for its second error of the night by driving a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left field to tie the game, 2-2 in the top of the sixth. With two out in the sixth, Dan Conway reached base when Irwin Centeno misplayed a grounded to the second baseman to keep the inning alive.
Both Bakersfield runs came in the second inning. Joey Gomes doubled, then scored on an Edgar Gonzalez single. Gonzalez came home on a single by Graig Merritt.
Yikes: Gerrit Simpson threw a season-high three wild pitches in the game. Two came during Bakersfield's two run second.
Even Worse: Chris Crawford hit Ryan Shealy with the first pitch after a mound visit by Blaze pitching coach Marty DeMerrit. The HBP loaded the bases. Shealy had hit the game-tying home run in his previous at-bat, but Crawford's next four pitches were all out of the strike zone to Corey Slavik who walked to drive in the inning run.
Going for a split in the four game series, the Oaks will send LHP Jeff Francis (2-7, 6.88 ERA) to the mound against Bakersfield LHP Chris Seddon (4-3, 3.19 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. The Radisson Pre Game Show will begin at 7:22 p.m. on AM 1270 KJUG.
