Mavs Finally Coming Home
June 5, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The High Desert Mavericks have been on the road for almost two weeks, but will finally return home to Friendly Mavericks Stadium on Friday night, June 6th to face Lake Elsinore. Friday night is Baseball Card Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans and all DCB Diamond Club members thanks to the California Department of Forestry and the USFS. Smokey Bear will also be on hand with his best friend Wooly Bully! Gates open at 6 and game time on Friday is 7:05. On Saturday night at 7:05, it's another Fireworks Show thanks to O'Doul's as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks spectacular. On Sunday at 3:05, the Mavs present another Little League Clinic thanks to Century 21 Desert Rock and Century 21 Fairway, as well as the Century 21 Home Run Derby which will take place before the game. Tickets for this weekend's action can be purchased at 246-MAVS! Since the Mavs have been on the road, numerous roster moves have been announced. The latest move sees right-handed relief pitcher Greg Schaub officially announce his retirement from baseball. Originally drafted in 1995 as an outfielder, Schaub made the conversion to pitcher in 2001 and has been with the Mavs for the last two seasons. Schaub got off to a great start this year before soreness in his right arm landed him on the DL and eventually led to him calling it a career. Right-handed starter Jeff Robinson was promoted to AA Huntsville where he will make his first career appearance in AA. Robinson was 1-1 this season for the Mavs and was an original member of the Mavs 2001 roster during the first year of the Mavs/Brewers affiliation. Filling two of the vacated roster spots are a pair of left-handed pitchers. Chad Petty, who was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Tigers joined the club this week and made his first appearance on Tuesday night in Lancaster. Petty, drafted by the Tigers in 2000 in the second round, joins the Mavs from Lakeland in the Florida State League. Petty will go into the rotation for Jeff Robinson and will make his first start on Saturday night against the Storm. Tommy Marx is the other lefty who joined the team last night in Lancaster. Marx is also former Detroit property, pitching in Lakeland in both 2001 and 2002. After being released by the Tigers in Spring Training, Marx played independent ball for Kalamazoo before signing with the Brewers this week. Marx is expected to work from the bullpen. Hope to see you here this weekend at Friendly Mavericks Stadium. Don't forget tickets can be purchased at 760-246-MAVS. All games can be heard live on 910 AM and on the web site at www.hdmavs.com.
