June 5, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release
Lancaster Ca. â Dan Hall sparkled for the Mavericks over seven innings in a 5-3 win over the JetHawks at the Hangar. High Desert (23-36) snaps their five game losing streak, winning just their second game in the last 12. The JetHawks (30-28) fall to 3-3 on the current seven game homestand.
Like starter Chris Saenz the previous night, Hall (5-4) worked seven innings, allowing just six hits and three runs. He held the JetHawks to just one base runner over the first four innings.
Jason Belcher staked Hall to a 2-0 lead with a two-run line drive homer in the first, his fourth of the season. The Mavericks never trailed the entire game.
Todd West provided the rest of the offense in the last three innings. West singled in two runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 4-1. His double in the ninth added an insurance run.
Kyle Nichols got the JetHawks on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the fifth, his 11th of the season. It was also the first hit that Hall allowed in the game.
Hall tired in the seventh, as Sergio Santos greeted him with a lead off single, followed by Jay Garthwaite's single one out later. After a strikeout of Mike DiRosa, Danny Richar took advantage of a shallow outfield with a two out two-run triple to right center field.
But Richar was stranded as the tying run at third, and Josh Kroeger was stranded at second in the eighth after a leadoff double.
Justin Wechsler (6-3) took the loss despite allowing just two hits and two runs over six innings. The right-hander was battling control problems for most of the night, walking four and hitting two, although just one of those six scored.
Bobby Bystrowski worked a perfect night for his 11th save.
The three game series and seven game homestand concludes at 7:15 p.m., as Doug Slaten (3-4, 5.77) will pitch against High Desert's Brian Mazone (0-6, 9.18).
On Friday, June 13th, the world renown Zooperstars come to the Hangar, presented by Washington Mutual.
