Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced the signing of two players today. William Jackel has been added to the Goldeyes bullpen, while Wilmer Pino will help man the infield.
Jackel, 25, was 5-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 46 games with the Joliet JackHammers last season. A native of Kennesaw, Ga., Jackel began his professional career in the Florida Marlins organization with their Gulf Coast League team in 2007. He spent 2008 with Texarkana of the Continental League. In 120 innings of work during his career, Jackel has only allowed one home run.
"He keeps the ball in the park, induces a lot of ground balls and I think he was a key part of that Joliet pitching staff that helped them reach the playoffs last year," Forney said.
Pino, 24, spent the last two seasons with the Edinburg Roadrunners in United League Baseball. He hit for a .325 average last summer, while adding seven home runs, 59 RBI and an astounding 50 stolen bases. Prior to his time in Edinburg, the product of San Felix, Venezuela was in the New York Yankees organization for three seasons at the Rookie and Single-A levels. He had a .266 batting average with the Yankees Gulf Coast team, Staten Island (Low-A) and Charleston (Single-A) over the three summers.
"His speed and versatility is something that really gets me excited when I think about adding him to the roster," Forney said. "He's stolen a lot of bases the last couple of years and it's not every day you can land a guy that can play five positions."
Pino has mostly played second base throughout his career, but can also play shortstop, third base, left field and right field.
Forney now has six players signed for the 2011 American Association season, including two pitchers and four position players.
Season tickets and nine-game mini packs for the 2011 season are available by calling the Goldeyes office at 982-BASE (2273) or visiting www.goldeyes.com.
