Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
Friday, March 4 at Fayetteville: Chad Peck and Tyler Perry both tallied hat tricks for Fayetteville in the worst loss of the season for the Polar Twins, a 12-1 thumping by the FireAntz at Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. The game set a new Southern Professional Hockey League record for most goals scored in one game by a single team. The previous record was held by Asheville with 11 goals, also against Winston-Salem.
All twelve FireAntz goals came before Steve Lajoie finally shattered the shutout bid for Chad Collins with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Overall, Collins stopped 33 of 34 shots on the night for Fayetteville, while Rick Nichol stopped 39 of 51 shots for the Polar Twins.
Saturday, March 5 at Knoxville: Seven different players scored for Knoxville as the Ice Bears soundly defeated the Polar Twins 9-2 at Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Kevin Swider lead the way for the first-place Ice Bears with five points (2 goals, 3 assists).
Playing with a shortened roster, Winston-Salem was unable to muster any kind of offense for the second night in a row. In all, Winston-Salem had 23 shots on goal, slightly more than one third of the 61 shots put on net by Knoxville.
The only bright spots for Winston-Salem were goals by Rhett Dudley and Shaun Aebig but it was not enough to keep the Ice Bears from taking their eighth win of the season from the Twins.
