LAST WEEK:

TUE March 1 ACES @ Columbus (4-2 Loss)

[COLUMBUS, GA] - The Asheville Aces lost 4-2 to the Columbus Cottonmouths but remain 10 points behind idle Huntsville for the remaining playoff spot in the SPHL.

The Cottonmouths struck early with a goal from Tylor Keller at the 1:45 mark of the opening period. Aces goalie Mark Scally stopped the remaining 11 shots thrown at him in the first, but was unable to contain the Cottonmouths who led off the second period with another early goal. This time it was Lorne Misita who beat Scally at 2:01.

Asheville rookie Eldon Cheechoo scored his second goal in as many games at 12:11 of the second period to bring the Aces to within one goal. The third period was scoreless until the 9:39 mark when Tim Green added one for the Cottonmouths on the power play. But Asheville's Billy Cameron added a power play goal of his own at 17:31 to once again bring the Aces within one. With Scally pulled for the extra attacker, however, Columbus' Orrin Hergott potted an empty netter to make the final score 4-2 in favor of the Cottonmouths.

Columbus goalie Chad Rycroft got the win with 24 saves on 26 shots, while the Aces' Scally got the loss with 32 stops on 36 shots.

THU March 3 Huntsville @ ACES

[ASHEVILLE, NC] - The Huntsville Havoc defeated the Asheville Aces 4-2 in front of 1,105 fans at the Asheville Civic Center Thursday night.

The Aces appeared to take the early lead as Billy Cameron shot the puck in a goalmouth scramble, but the officials indicated that the puck did not cross the goal line completely. The bad luck continued for Asheville as a bad bounce off an Aces defender slid between the pads of goalie Mark Scally (49 saves on 53 shots) for a 1-0 Huntsville lead. The goal was credited to Huntsville's Brandon Doria.

Huntsville added a quick goal to pad their lead 2:02 into the second period, but Asheville's Chester Gallant beat Matt Carmichael high over the glove to bring the Aces within one. Doug Merrell made it 3-1 Havoc with just under five minutes remaining in the second. Then, while on the power play, another disputed goal was awarded to Huntsville as Dan Buccella appeared to knock the puck out of mid-air with his stick and put it past Scally. The Aces argued the call fervently but to no avail.

With cooler heads, the Aces returned for the third period and Chris Kovalcik scored his first professional goal to make it 4-2 in favor of Huntsville. That was all the offense Asheville could muster, even with Scally pulled for over a minute and a half nearing the end of the game.

FRI March 4 Columbus @ ACES

[ASHEVILLE, NC] - Rebounding from a tough loss the previous night to Huntsville, the Aces put together one of their strongest games of the season to defeat the Columbus Cottonmouths 5-2 at the Asheville Civic Center.

Columbus' Tom McMonagle opened the scoring after picking up a loose puck in the slot and firing it through the legs of Aces goalie Mark Scally. The Aces settled in to the flow of the game and it was Chad Brandimore who opened the scoring for Asheville, beating Chad Rycroft over the glove to make it 1-1. Eighteen seconds later, Billy Cameron made it 2-1 in favor of the Aces.

Tim Green tied the game up at 2-2 mid-way through the second but Chris Kovalcik potted his second goal in as many nights to bring the Aces back into the lead and they never looked back.

Peter Cermak and Martin Viazanica both had third period goals to ice the victory for Asheville.

TEAM APPEARANCES:

Monday, March 7: Coach's Show at Hannah Flanagan's - 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

TEAM NOTES:

The Aces will be auctioning off their blue game worn jerseys on Friday night immediately following the completion of the game versus Knoxville. They will wear their green "third jersey" for the remainder of the season.

Peter Cermak and Chad Brandimore both returned to the Aces lineup and did not disappoint, each having a goal in Friday night's victory over Columbus.
