Madison Capitols News Release
With a long winter still between now and next June, the ramp up to the 2024 NHL Draft has begun. NHL Central Scouting has released their initial list of players as the lead up to the 2024 NHL Draft has begun. Just like last season, Madison has two players on its active roster on the Preliminary List of Players to Watch, Austin Burnevik and Will Felicio. Both players for Madison were projected as "W-ratings", which means that NHL Central Scouting has put them in a category to be candidates 6th or 7th round picks in the draft.
For Felicio, the reigning USHL All-Rookie team defenseman, the honor comes as he has been mentioned with the 2024 Draft class since the players started being ranked. He broke a league record for points for a 16-year-old defenseman with 28 during his tender season with Madison last year. Felicio is committed to the University of Denver of the NCHC.
The NHL Central Scouting Lists are something that Austin Burnevik has been used to. He spent last year on each of the lists including being ranked 92nd among North American Skaters heading into the draft last season. Although his name wasn't called in Nashville last summer, his hot start has him trending towards being called next summer in Vegas. Burnevik is committed to St. Cloud State University of the NCHC.
There is still a lot of work to do for the pair of skaters, but Associate Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Tom Gilbert knows the value for a player to be ranked on this list.
"I think to be recognized at any level, especially when you have people at a high caliber, NHL-level watching, is a great accomplishment. It doesn't necessarily mean anything to have your name on a piece of paper, with the draft this far away, but these guys are working really hard. People see it and recognize it, and I think that it's just a positive thing moving forward for them."
The 2024 NHL Draft is set to take place in June in Las Vegas. There's still a lot of time for the two players on this list to move up and for players not mentioned on this list to make their impact to find themselves on lists moving forward. For the Capitols, that starts this weekend as they face off against the US National Team Development Team's U-17s on Friday and U-18s on Saturday. The NTDP had 19 players named on the initial list including one player projected as a first round candidate.
Following the three-game road trip, the Caps return home the first weekend of November to face Omaha. Tickets for the two-game series can be found at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
