Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Urbandale (IA) The United States Hockey League today announced the 40 players selected to compete in the 2012 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and that list includes a pair of current Des Moines Buccaneers. Forwards Kevin Irwin and Zach Saar will represent the team at the game scheduled for Tuesday January 24th in Muskegon, MI.
The game, which is the first of its kind for the USHL, will showcase many of the league's top 2012 NHL draft eligible players. The players will be divided into two teams, the make-up of which will be announced at a later date.
Kevin Irwin is in his second season with the Buccaneers and has 12 points (7 goals, 5 assists) in 19 games played this season. In November he skated with Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge in British Columbia. Irwin is a native of Hinckley, OH and is committed to play collegiately at Ohio State.
Zach Saar joined the Buccaneers in a trade with the Chicago Steel earlier this week. The Plainwell, MI native had 13pts (8g, 5a) for Chicago and is committed to play at Penn State.
Two former Buccaneers were also selected for the game including 2010-2011 Buc Justin Selman who is now with Sioux Falls and Ray Pigozzi who was traded to Chicago for Saar this week.
The selection process for the players was completed in cooperation with league coaches as well as NHL scouts and decision makers.
The Buccaneers (11-12-2) are back in action Friday at Omaha and home on Saturday against Sioux Falls with both games beginning at 7pm. Saturday night's game will feature "90's Night" at Buccaneer Arena with music and pop culture references from the 1990s all night long.
The Des Moines Buccaneers are playing their 32nd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League this season. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
