Two Big Innings Lead Keys to Five-Run Victory

FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys (44-53, 9-19) used a four-run and a three-run inning to defeat the Down East Wood Ducks (44-54, 9-19) on Thursday night at Nymeo Field. In the game, Preston Palmeiro collected a home run and drove in three runs.

Frederick jumped out to an early lead in the first. Cole Billingsley collected a one-out double and scored on a Wilson Garcia double to right-center field. Garcia then scored when Randolph Gassaway singled. On the very next pitch, Palmeiro launched a two-run home run to right field to give the Keys a 4-0 lead.

The Wood Ducks responded in the top of the second. Yanio Perez hit his first home run of the year to make it a 4-1 game.

The score remained 4-1 until the seventh. The Keys tagged Jairo Beras for three insurance runs. Gassaway collected a triple, and scored on a Palmeiro sacrifice fly. With two outs, T.J. Nichting singled to right before Jomar Reyes crushed a two-run home run to left-center field.

In the eighth, Down East added their second run. Franklin Rollin doubled to start the frame. He moved to third on a Leody Taveras ground out. Rollin then scored on a LeDarious Clark single which made it a 7-2 lead for the Keys.

Alex Wells (4-6) picked up the win for the Keys. He scattered four hits over 5.2 innings of one run baseball while striking out six. Joe Palumbo (0-2) took the loss for Down East. He allowed four runs on six hits over three innings while walking one and striking out two.

The three-game series between the Keys and Wood Ducks concludes on Friday. The Keys send right-hander Mike Baumann (4-2, 4.07) to the mound. He will be opposed by right-hander Emerson Martinez (4-9, 4.05) for the Wood Ducks.
