September 7, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Drillers continued their quest to finish their season on a high note Sunday night in Springfield. The Tulsa offense stayed on fire, scoring 7 runs in the first three innings, as the Drillers defeated the Cardinals 10-4 at Hammons Field.
Every starter in the Drillers lineup ended the night with a hit as Tulsa ended the night with 15 hits.
After the Cardinals got out to a quick 1-0 lead after the first inning, the Drillers responded in a big way in the top of the second.
Utilizing 7 hits, including an RBI double from Tulsa starting pitcher Steve Smith, the Drillers roared in front as they scored 6 runs in the frame to claim a 6-1 advantage.
The Drillers added another run in the third on a Brandon Dixon run-scoring double.
Springfield closed the gap in the fourth inning as the Cardinals scored three runs on a solo homer from Mike Ohlman followed later in the inning by RBI knocks from Mike O'Neill and Bruce Caldwell as they drew to within 7-4.
Smith, frustrated by some calls during the inning, was ejected by the home plate umpire prompting manager Razor Shines to bring in Ralston Cash in relief.
Cash ended the inning without further damage and that would be the last time the Cardinals crossed the plate on the night.
Meanwhile, the Drillers were not done at the plate as they sealed their win in the eighth inning with three more runs. One run scored when Kyle Farmer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The other two runs came home on a Joey Curletta RBI single.
A trio of Tulsa relievers followed Cash to the mound to close out the 10-4 Tulsa win.
Cash picked up his second win of the year for Tulsa with his 1.1 innings of relief while Springfield starter Jimmy Reed suffered the loss after surrendering six runs over just 1.2 innings.
The Drillers will look to end their 2015 season with a sweep of the Cardinals on a matinee Monday final game. Rob Rogers (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will get the start for Tulsa while Andrew Morales (4-8, 5.21 ERA) will pitch for Springfield as the Cardinals hope to salvage their playoff chances with a win. The final game of the year will begin Monday afternoon at 12:10PM.
