
Tucson's Green earns PCL Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Tucson Sidewinders' Andy Green scored 10 times and hit five extra base hits, two homers, two triples and a double to be named the PCL Player of the Week for the week of June 27-July 3. Juan Cruz of the Sacramento River Cats earns the Pitcher of the Week award for striking out 21 in 12.1 innings while allowing just one earned run and five hits, the League announced today.
Green is hitting .344 with 10 home runs and 53 runs batted in on the season. He is on top of the League in hits (114), triples (10), extra base hits (47), and runs scored (72), while only trailing teammate, Conor Jackson in doubles with 27. Jackson has 31. Green, born on July 7, 1977 in Lexington, Kentucky, will start with Jackson in this year's Triple-A All-Star game in Sacramento, California and becomes the second Tucson player to earn Player of the Week honors this year. Teammate Scott Hairston earned the honor on the 6th of June.
Originally from Bonao in the Dominican Republic, Cruz posted a 0.73 ERA last week, striking out 21 batters, allowing five hits and one earned run. Cruz, 26, has pitched 21 games this season with the Oakland A's with a career 4.34 ERA in 149 games at the Major League level. Last season, he posted a 6-2 record with a 2.72 ERA with the Atlanta Braves, striking out 70 in 72.0 innings of work.
