Round Rock Express News Release

(Des Moines, IA) - When Express starter Fernando Nieve only needed five pitches to record the first three outs of the ballgame, Iowa Cubs fans sensed their club might be in for a long night. The night only took a little over two and a half hours, but the twenty-two year old Nieve was special. He recorded the first complete game shutout for the Triple-A Express, and his teammates gave him all the offense he needed, five runs, and the 5-0 win gave Round Rock a two games to one lead in the series.

Nieve's teammates gave him a 1-0 lead in the first on a lead-off single by CF Charles Gipson and SS Danny Klassen's RBI double.

They tacked on two more runs in the third inning when a wild pitch from Cubs starter Todd Wellemeyer scored Luke Scott who had walked with two outs in the inning. Danny Klassen, who singled with two outs, scored on an RBI double from 1B Carlos Rivera and the Express led 3-0.

Nieve allowed only ten base runners. He surrendered seven hits, struck out four and walked only one, winning his second PCL game.

Round Rock put up its final two runs of the night in the eighth inning off reliever Carmen Pignatello. Brooks Conrad and Todd Self got aboard on walks that opened the inning. They scored on RBI singles by Nieve and Gipson to make it a final of 5-0.

The series ends at 7:05 PM tomorrow as right-hander Ezequiel Astacio goes for the Express against lefty Raul Valdez. Remember, you can watch the Express games in Iowa live by clicking on the b2 Network logo on the Express website - www.roundrockexpress.com.
