KANSAS CITY, KANSAS - Late match heroics from defender Triston Hodge helped Memphis 901 FC walk out of Children's Mercy Park with a point Wednesday night.
The 2-2 result also extended 901 FC's unbeaten streak to four-straight in all competitions headed into its next match, a May 29 meeting with Hartford Athletic at Mike Rose Soccer Complex in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
"We found a way to get a huge point on the road against a very good team tonight," 901 FC head coach Tim Mulqueen said. "It wasn't our best night of soccer per se.
"But we've been in matches where we've played great soccer and walked away without points. So, getting a point tonight on the road is something we can take going into our Open Cup match next week."
Wednesday night started off with a bang for 901 FC as midfielder Dan Metzger tapped in his first goal of the season off a Marc Burch corner kick.
The goal in the third minute was the fastest goal in club history.
Memphis kept the slim lead for the first 30 minutes of play until Swope was awarded a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
Swope Park captain Camden Riley converted the penalty to make it 1-1 as both teams entered halftime with the score level.
As play resumed in the second half, the hosts took the late advantage with Swope fullback Mark Segbers putting the club up 2-1 in the 68th minute from a shot six yards out.
That lead was short-lived as Memphis again capitalized on a set piece just five minutes later in the 73rd minute.
Midfielder Cam Lindley served a perfect ball into the box off the corner and Hodge headed home the equalizer, spoiling Swope's shot at its second win of the season.
Memphis now has two wins and two draws to its name in its past four matches (all competitions). The club also scored its ninth goal of the stretch in its fourth-straight multi-goal match.
"I think we're starting to expect to score goals," Mulqueen said of his club's recent form. "We are starting to build momentum on this streak but it's also about keeping to our mantra of getting better every single day."
Memphis 901 FC returns home Thursday for a brief period of rest before turning its attention to next Wednesday's match against Hartford.
Kickoff is set for a 7:00 p.m. and tickets for that match are now available for season ticket holders.
