OKC Energy FC News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - Energy FC defenders Alvin Jones (Trinidad and Tobago), Mekeil Williams (Trinidad and Tobago), midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson (Jamaica) and forwards Cordell Cato (Trinidad and Tobago) and Omar Gordon (Jamaica) have been selected to the 40-man squads for their respective national teams ahead of this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup. With 17 players from across the United Soccer League being named, Energy FC has the most of any club.
The 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup will be the 15th edition of the tournament, the biennial men's football championship of North, Central America and the Caribbean region. The United States are the defending champions, having defeated Jamaica in the 2017 final. That Jamaica side featured both Gordon and Watson in the starting lineup, with the latter scoring in the 2-1 loss to the USMNT. The United States, Costa Rica and Jamaica are all co-hosting the 2019 competition which begins on June 15 and ends on July 7.
The players representing Trinidad and Tobago will leave June 2 for friendlies in Japan on June 5 and Los Angeles on June 10 against Japan and Canada, respectively.
The players representing Jamaica will leave on June 3 to play against the United States on June 5 in Washington, D.C. From there, they will travel to Jamaica from June 6-15 for preparation and selection of the final squad for the tournament.
"I'm really excited for the players," said Head Coach Steve Cooke. "They dream of not only representing their countries, but to go play in a tournament like the Gold Cup is absolutely fantastic. It's in an honor for them personally, it's an honor for their families, and I'm really thrilled for them."
Energy FC have had nine players earn international call-ups while with the club. In addition to Cato, Gordon, Jones, Watson and Williams, Josh Garcia (Dominican Republic), Atiba Harris (Saint Kitts & Nevis), Cody Laurendi (Puerto Rico), Jaime Siaj (Jordan) and Coy Craft (U.S. U-20 team) have all received the honor.
Energy FC are back at Taft Stadium this Saturday to take on Colorado Switchbacks FC at 7:30 p.m.
