September 9, 2004 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL- Three members of the Schaumburg Flyers were named to the 2004 Northern League All-Star Team on Thursday, September 9 as post-season honorees were announced by the Northern League office in Fort Worth, TX.
1B Mario Delgado, SS Geoff McCallum and RHP Hank Woodman have all been named to the NL All-Star Team after turning in outstanding individual performances during the '04 regular season. The Schaumburg Flyers were the only team to place three selections on the Northern League team. The complete team roster can be seen at northernleague.com.
After going hitless in the first four games of the season, Delgado went 4-for-4 on May 24 at Kansas City and remained on the attack for the rest of the season, batting .318 with 23 HR-104 RBI. The 25-year old slugger set a new Northern League record for most RBI in a season, surpassing the old mark of 103 on September 4 at Joliet. He doubled his previous career high in RBI and more than doubled his previous best in home runs.
Delgado re-wrote the Flyer record books in 2004 with the best individual offensive season in team history, setting single season records for home runs and RBI and becoming the new franchise career leader in batting average, home runs and RBI after a fine season in 2003. Delgado added 31 doubles to his power numbers, another category in which he holds team records for a season and career. He played in all 96 regular season games and batted third in every game. Delgado made 86 starts at first base. The four-year pro played in the Phillies organization in 2001-02. He resides in San Diego.
Like Delgado, Geoff McCallum enjoyed a career year in 2004, batting .358 with 3 HR-48 RBI, 16 stolen bases and 86 runs scored from the leadoff spot in the order. The Schaumburg shortstop set a league record of his own, breaking the previous mark for most hits in a season with a Northern League best 138 hits. The previous record of 136 had been established by two players in 2001. McCallum's .358 batting average was third best in the league and the highest single season mark in Flyers history, surpassing Matt Nokes' .354 mark in 2001.
McCallum, 26, also set a new Flyers record for runs scored in 2004. The league leader in double plays by a shortstop for two years running, he anchored that position again in 2004, playing in 93 of 96 games. McCallum has also played in the Frontier League, at Fargo and briefly in the Seattle organization in 2001. He resides in London, Ontario.
Despite five no-decisions in starts, Woodman had the finest statistics of his four-year Flyers career in every category but wins. The Schaumburg ace went 6-6 with a 1.95 ERA. The ERA ranked second in the league and shattered the previous Flyers mark for lowest ERA in a season. Like Delgado and McCallum, Woodman led the league in a category, racking up a Northern League and career high 141 strikeouts.
Individual highlights included a 16-strikeout game against Winnipeg on August 28 at Alexian Field that tied a modern Northern League record.
Woodman, 31, is the all-time leader in several Flyers pitching categories including wins (27) and strikeouts (428). He has prior experience in the Twins and Rangers organizations and resides in Bonita Springs, FL.
The Schaumburg trio brings the all-time number of team all-star selections to seven, dating back to 1999. The Flyers have never had three players named in one season before. Kirk Pierce was the only Schaumburg player named to last year's post-season All-Star Team.
