Northern League All-Star Team and Awards Announced
September 9, 2004 - Northern League (NL) News Release
Outfielder Casey Baker of the Sioux City Explorers and lefthander Mike Peschel of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks are the winners of the Northern League's 2004 Rookie Awards, it was announced today by the league office.
Baker was selected as the Rookie of the Year while Peschel earned Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors. It was also announced that righthander Chris Chavez of the St. Paul Saints is the 2004 Relief Pitcher of the Year.
The Northern League also released its 2004 All-Star Team, led by three players from the Schaumburg Flyers.
Baker received 26 of 31 votes cast by team executives, managers, and media to earn Rookie of the Year honors. The 25-year-old batted .337, fifth highest in the league, with two homers and 36 rbi in 82 games in 2004. The lefthanded batter had the league's longest hitting streak of the season at 18 games.
Peschel outdistanced Winnipeg's Shayn Holbrook as the Rookie Pitcher of the Year. The 25-year-old lefthander was 7-2 with a 2.86 era, third lowest among league qualifiers, in 17 games/16 starts for the RedHawks this season.
Chavez earned his second consecutive Relief Pitcher of the Year Award as the St. Paul closer established a new Northern League record with 29 saves. The righthander was 2-0, 2.20 in 43 appearances in helping the Saints to the league's best overall record at 61-34.
In addition, league managers and media selected Haymarket Park in Lincoln as the Northern League's Best Playing Surface for a second straight season.
In addition to the three Schaumburg Flyers, the 2004 Northern League All-Star Team includes two players each from the Joliet JackHammers, Kansas City T-Bones, and St. Paul Saints and one member of both the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Winnipeg Goldeyes. The two Kansas City players are the only returnees from the 2003 All-Star squad, outfielder Rick Prieto and designated hitter Eddie Pearson, the latter being the lone unanimous selection.
The Northern League Awards for Player, Pitcher, Manager, Executive, and Organization of the Year will be announced on Monday, September 13.
